In this three-part course, we will discuss planning, establishing and growing on fruit trees to production utilizing organic gardening methods and materials. Session one will focus on site selection, tree selection, soil preparation and planting. Session two will focus on managing insect pests and disease through certified organic and no-spray methods. Session three will focus on management techniques, such as pruning, training young trees and fruit thinning.

C.J. Walke has been working with the Maine Organic Farmers and Gardeners Association (MOFGA) since 2006. He’s held various MOFGA roles over time, such as Landscape Coordinator, Organic Orchardist and Development Associate. In his current part-time role as Downeast Specialist, C.J. focuses on education and technical services for organic gardeners and growers east of the Penobscot River. He is also host of MOFGA’s monthly Common Ground Radio show on WERU (89.9 FM and weru.org). C.J. and his family live in Bar Harbor where he manages a small farm for the College of the Atlantic.
