Senior College Artists – it’s time to show your stuff!
We would especially love to have students of Senior College art courses participate in this year’s show. If you were in the show last year, you have already received a “Save the Date” notice from Juliane Dow, and will soon receive information and a registration form from her. If you are a new artist to the Festival, informational materials may be requested at seniorcollegefestivalofart@gmail.com.
Our goal is 150 artists this year; please be one of them!
Read Across America
About thirty seven volunteers from Belfast Senior College will visit Waldo County Elementary Schools in March during season for Read Across America, which is a nation-wide program to highlight the importance of reading aloud to children, started in 1997 by the National Education Association. March 2 is the birthday of well-known children’s author Theodore Geisel (a.k.a. Dr. Seuss), and the program is set in early March in his honor.
Last year, about a dozen volunteers from Senior College read to children in grades K-2 at Captain Albert Stevens Elementary School in Belfast. This year, the Community Service Committee, co-chaired by Wendy C. Kasten and Marjory B. Stickler, have ramped up their efforts in order to reach more Waldo County schools and children who would benefit from extra reading and attention. Between March 1-9, Senior College volunteers will visit Monroe Elementary, Morse Elementary (Brooks), East Belfast Elementary, Kermit Nickerson Elementary (Swanville), Searsport Elementary, Captain Albert Stevens Elementary, the Lincolnville School, and the Edna Drinkwater School (Northport).
Principal Jody Henderson, principal of Stevens Elementary commented, “Seniors will be coming to the Capt. A. Stevens School to read with the students in kindergarten and grade 1. This has been a tradition in our school for ten years. Students love to read to our seniors or be read to. It is a beautiful exchange of giving to each other!” One seasoned volunteer remarks that “Sharing special books with young readers is a joy.”
