Fall Classes

Dear Senior College members and friends,

September is here and for me it brings nostalgic memories of the past. As a youngster I remember watching the Hit Parade with my parents and listening to a song entitled “September Song” made popular by the wistful crooning of Nat King Cole. Then later as a teen the hit “See You in September” by The Tempos was ever so fun to cha cha to as we said goodbye at the end of another school year.

In my “September” years I am made painfully aware of the passing of the days and the end of the season of light and sunshine. Yet Fall beckons with promise of crisp days, colorful vistas, and the beginning of a new academic year. Try as I might, September really means back-to-school even in my seventh decade. And today that means the beginning of another session of Senior College!

While I really won’t see you in person in September I will be able to “zoom” you this fall! “As the autumn leaves begin to fall” we may continue to suffer from zoom fatigue but the truth is it does offer us the opportunity to see one another’s faces, listen to family updates, and share ideas and thoughts with one another while hoping for that day when we can share in person at the Hutchinson Center.

In just three short weeks the Fall Session will begin and once again we are fortunate to welcome a distinguished group of instructors offering a varied and interesting curriculum. There are new faces and familiar ones but each has something unique to share and we hope you will enrol in a class that will bring you knowledge and joy. Several new offerings have been posted since classes were first posted including a look at Women of Maine by Maine Women and a preview of a new course for Winterim. Go to: https://belfast-senior-college.coursestorm.com/ for the complete list.

Also don’t forget that as a member of Belfast Senior College you are welcome to enrol in courses at the other 16 Senior Colleges. For a list of all offerings visit the Maine Senior College webpage at https://www.maineseniorcollege.org/mscn-online-classes.

I hope you have had a restful, engaging summer. I was pleased to welcome friends and a host of family members to Belfast this summer and now it is time to set my sights on Fall undertakings and activities. I am looking forward to not only teaching a course but being a “student” in several others. Senior College gives definition and purpose to another season of waiting for this latest Covid threat to end.

Join me and others this September at Belfast Senior College online!

Senior College member Janet Williams, newsletter and Corona Chronicles editor, has written and published a book entitled Maxx and Mrs. Queen. This exquisitely illustrated and lovingly written tale will warm the hearts of children and adults who love and care for animals. Without giving too much away, it is the story of rescuing dogs and cats from life on the streets of London. The story winds its way from Buckingham Palace through the streets of London and St. James’s Park, bringing the homeless animals to safety, a Royal Fur Ball, and much more.

Please see the Maxx and Mrs. Queen website for more information about the book and how it came to be. Janet is donating all proceeds from the sale of this book to animal rescue.
