Northeast Historic Film (NHF) is a moving image archives whose mission is to collect and preserve the film and video record of northern New England (Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, and Massachusetts), and to provide public access to the history and culture of the region embodied in it.
Their collections are comprised of over 10 million feet of film and several thousand hours of videotape including everything from home movies and amateur films to industrial and educational films; from silent dramas and experimental works to television film and videotape. We will see a selection of films from the collection including the oldest film shot in Maine in 1901
The tour will also show us their collection of amateur and professional film equipment, community cinema records, photographs, periodicals, and books as well as the three-story conservation center that houses their media and media from other organizations in state-of-the-art climate conditions
The Penobscot Marine Museum photography archive is the largest in the state, boasting more than 200,000 photographic images. The archive is made up of scores of collections that span the late nineteenth century to the present day and depict how our villages and towns have evolved over time.
Senior College visitors will see a slideshow that will provide an overview of the most significant collections and show some of the highlights of each. This will be followed by a tour of the archives where some of the treasures will be available for viewing along with a demonstration of their digitization and data basing process that allows the images to be preserved and shared with the world.
