Picture of partial solar eclipseJoin us for an immersive experience to see one astrophotographer’s stunning images of both solar and lunar eclipses from locations around the globe at the Planetarium on the University of Maine campus in Orono.

Maine is one of the few states in the US that will experience a total eclipse of the sun April 8, 2024. The sky will become an eerie twilight in the afternoon as the sun is replaced during about an hour of gradual changes by the black disk of the full moon’s shadow until the shadow covers the sun for 3 minutes, showing just the sun’s gossamer halo of light, a total eclipse.

The Planetarium presentation will include information about how to safely observe the April eclipse in Maine, and eclipse viewing glasses will be available in the Planetarium gift shop. Additionally, we are allowing time to view Planetarium exhibits in the lobby after the show.

We have arranged for an optional group lunch at Sea Dog Brewing Co. at 26 Front Street in Bangor after our Planetarium visit.

Carpooling is recommended. We will meet at the lower parking lot at the Hutchinson Center at 9:00am, in time to leave for the Planetarium located at 167 Rangely Road on the Orono campus.

There is no charge for this event, but you must register. Registration is open to Senior College members and to the public, as well. Participants will treat themselves to lunch.

When you register you will be asked if you want to car pool and whether you will be joining the group for lunch.
