Belfast Senior College is providing an opportunity for members and the public to experience glassblowing during a 3-hour session at Waterfall Arts on May 23, 2024 from 9 am to noon.
We are fortunate to have a glassblowing studio in the basement of the Waterfall Arts building staffed by teachers who are professional glass artists. Now in its third year of operation, using recycled vegetable oil from local restaurants to fuel the furnaces, our glassblowing studio is the only full-time community-based public access studio in Maine.
The instructors will give a tour of the components of the studio, describe the basic procedures and safety information and demonstrate the process to the whole group. Then, participants will choose to create either a cast heart or a small ornament, and one by one receive help to transform the molten glass into a creation. Your work can be picked up the following day after cooling down in a kiln overnight to prevent cracking.
Safety glasses will be provided. Please wear closed-toe shoes. We recommend participants bring a personal water container to maintain hydration, since the studio may be quite warm. An adjacent bathroom and art library are available for comfort breaks.
Accessibility: Please note that the basement studio is accessed via stairs. Waterfall Arts has a number of handicapped parking spaces.
There will be just 15 students in the group. The cost of the class is $75 per person, paid at the time of registration.
