Have you been putting off reading Middlemarch - or did you read it years ago and you'd like to revisit it?

Middlemarch by George Eliot (Mary Ann Evans) is one of the world's most widely-read novels, for many reasons: readers can easily identify with the characters, and also because of Eliot's deft use of satire and her sharp interest in the England that she studied and knew well. While she was writing in the early 1870's, she set the novel in the 1820's and styled herself as a "belated historian" in doing so.

This class was presented 12 years ago, but will provide much to savor and discuss whether it is a first reading or a return to an old friend.

The class will follow the Middlemarch text by chapters rather than by page numbers; however, having a text with notes and commentary is recommended such as Penguin Classics or Barnes and Nobles text, both from Amazon or Thrift. Middlemarch is free on Kindle and easier to read but has no commentary.

Among her favorites have been Eliot's Daniel Deronda, a number of Dickens' novels, A Feminist Reading of Jane Eyre, African American Poetry, The Case for Banned Books along with Huckleberry Finn and Beloved, Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, and (with Rebecca Jessup) Gilgamesh. She is eager to continue to share her love of special books with the Senior College community.
