What’s Under Belfast’s Geodesic Domes?

Tour of Sewage Treatment Facility

On Tuesday, April 25 at 1:30 pm you are welcome to join a tour of Belfast’s Sewage Treatment Facility and find out what is under those domes.  This special event organized by Belfast Senior College will take you on a walk up and down stairs and around the plant to understand our local treatment process.
 
Evolved over the last 150 years, the present-day system consists of about 27 miles of sewer pipes moving sewage from connected city users by a combination of gravity and pumps to the facility at the foot of the hill on Front Street.  We will hear about what happens next in the largely biodegrading process that transforms the waste into sludge (transported to a landfill) and harmless liquid discharged by an out-fall pipe 1500’ into the Passy River.
