Participants will create a needlework stitch book with fabric and thread (or yarn ). We will discuss various forms of embroidery (embroidery, crewel, blackwork, etc.) and decide which stitches we want to learn for personal use.

Each class will focus on creating and practicing four or more stitches, experimenting with using them. By the end of this 4 week course everyone will have a fabric book of stitches to be used for future projects or enjoyed as a completed project on its own.

Materials needed:

  • floss and/or wool threads - two colors
  • assorted needles and threader
  • hoop
  • fabric for book
  • scissors

Instructor: Cyrene Slegona

Cyrene Slegona has done needlework of various styles since she was a young girl, learning first from her grandmother and mother. A special interest has been experimenting with embroidery - freestyle crewel, rework and Jacobean - a style which dates back to Elizabeth I. There are endless ways to be creative with needle and thread - all that is needed is personal inspiration and mastery of a few stitches of interest.
