In this 6 lecture course, we will explore the amazing journeys of Captain John Smith in the time frame 1607-1614, with the primary focus on Smith's exploration of the Maine and New England coast in 1614. The material presented is taken mostly from published accounts by Capt. Smith himself, by one of the his officers at the Jamestown Colony William Strackey, and the first-hand accounts of several sailors on these expeditions. We also present information on explorations of the Maine Coast that preceded John Smith, including detailed accounts of the Popham Colony of 1607.

The subject headings for the six lectures are the following:

#1. History of the Popham Colony

#2. John Smith at Jamestown

#3. Detailed study of John Smith's 1614 Map of New England and his voyage

#4. Analysis of John Smith's writing in "A Description of New England"

#5. Study of Russel Lawson's book "The Sea Mark", detailing the 1614 expedition

#6. A photographic journey of Fort St. George (Maine) and Star Island (NH)

PLEASE NOTE: This class is offered as a hybrid format (in-person and on Zoom). It is the same class / same time, even though it's listed twice on the website. We ask that you please register for either in-person or hybrid attendance, so we may plan physical seating needs.
