As a youth in the 1940’s, Stephen May (1931-2016) collected autographs from famous people. The Collection includes some 1400 signatures of individuals who were recognized for their achievements in wide-ranging occupations, from Arts & Letters, to Inventors, to Sports figures (Babe Ruth!), to people central to the lead-up, conduct, and aftermath of World War II.

In this class, Stephen's widow shares the stories of this young collector, who spent his summers in Union, Maine, and the people who responded to his requests for autographs. It is a window into the mid-20th century world and a recollection of those who shaped our world today. Baby-boomers, particularly, are sure to delight in remembering some of the celebrities from whom Stephen collected autographs.
