Anton Chekov's Plays Out Loud

We will be reading aloud a few of Anton Chekhov's plays, both one-act comedies and a full-act serious play. The course promises to be both fun and thoughtful. We will explore the short-lived Russian renaissance of the 19th century, Chekhov's part in its literary scene, and his influence on the modern theater.

We shall read the hilarious one acts "The Bear" and "The Marriage Proposal". The full-act plays under consideration are "The Cherry Orchard" and "Uncle Vanya". If time permits, we will read both.

Chekhov was a master at understanding and revealing the internal motivation of his characters against the background of changing Russian society.

Instructor: Kristin Frangoulis

Kristin has been involved in theater since college days. She has taught theater in high schools and in an arts and humanities school for gifted and talented children. She has extensive experience in directing and acting and behind the scenes work as artistic director. Kristin founded two theater companies, The Blue Hill Players (a community theater), and The Peanutbutter & Jelly Players (an outreach theater for disadvantaged children) that was partially funded by Arts and Humanities grants.

She has always had an interest in Russian literature and has studied Russian language and traveled to Russia in the past.
