This course will offer a broad overview of the life and times of the Maine artist, Louise Nevelson. We will examine the aspects of her life which compelled her to push the boundaries in terms of social constraints, familial limitations, artistic repression and self expression as she strived to achieve her own identity though paintings, sculptures, theater & dance.

Participants can enjoy some "hands on" activities for each week of the class. A field trip to the Farnsworth Art Museum in Rockland will be included, where a tour of some of her works of different genres will be led by Farnsworth staff.

Please note:

This course will begin ONE WEEK AHEAD of the other courses in the Belfast Senior College fall semester.

There are MULTIPLE LOCATIONS for class meetings:

  • September 15 at Senior College at The Belfast Center, 9 Field Street, Suite 330, Belfast
  • September 22 field trip to The Farnsworth Art Museum in Rockland
  • September 29 & October 6 at United Methodist Church, Mill Lane, Belfast

The field trip will take place midday on September 22. It will include exploration of Nevelson's childhood neighborhood, a visit to Rockland Library to view mementos of her high school achievements, and Farnsworth Art Museum for a guided tour of Nevelson's works. Participants will bring a bag lunch.
