The Biosphere is a concept of the Earth that is the sum of geology, climatic zones, vegetation, food chains, and soil processes where life exists. It is derived from the scientific discoveries based on Von Humboldt's Cosmos and his observation of ‘Naturgemälde’, which in 1803, described the relationships between elevation and vegetation.

The subject of Ecology is its modern discipline. World soils, biogeographic cycling within forests and other biomes, and studies the influences of issues like water pollution by fertilizer, pesticides, erosion, septic systems, and stormwater management, topics that will be discussed in this course.

Land Acknowledgement

We want to respectfully acknowledge and honor the Wabanaki Confederacy—specifically the Abenaki, Maliseet, Micmac, Passamaquoddy, and Penobscot Nations—who have stewarded this land throughout the generations. We recognize that we are on their ancestral, traditional, and unceded homelands. We affirm their inherent tribal sovereignty, pay respect to elders past and present, and commit to the ongoing work of truth-telling and decolonization in Maine and beyond.
