Events

We offer a number of special events and programs in addition to our regular classes. Events include behind-the-scenes tours, one-time workshops, field trips, and our BSC Speaker Series.

Some events are free and open to the community; others have a fee. Certain events may only be opened up for non-members to attend after our members have had the opportunity to sign up first.

Join us on June 11 for a tour of Maine Grains, a flour mill using three millstones imported from Austria located in a renovated brick jailhouse. Over 2.5 million pounds of grain are processed here each year. The one-hour tour will be followed by lunch in the on-site Miller’s Table Cafe serving foods made with Maine Grain flours from scratch including pizza made in their copper domed pizza oven.

Maine Grains are sold locally at Hannaford and The Belfast Co-op, and their oats are a favorite of Martha Stewart. Their flours have been featured in Bon Appétit and The New York Times.

In the same building is a cheese creamery shop, a shop selling cookbooks, bakeware and Maine-made goods, and a shop selling knitting and crocheting supplies.

Because this is a food producing facility, earplugs and hairnets will be provided, and we will be climbing stairs, so comfortable shoes are suggested.

This tour is sponsored by Belfast Senior College. We will be carpooling from Belfast to Skowhegan. The cost is $25 per person, and participants will purchase their own lunch. The tour is limited to 20 people.

Carpooling groups will meet at 9:00 AM at Reny's Belfast parking lot.

Participants who are not car pooling should plan to arrive at Maine Grains by 10:30 AM.

Additional trip details will be shared by email upon sign-up.

For more information please call Martha Laitin at (207) 323-2368.

Members of Belfast Senior College’s “History with Pizzazz” study group celebrate our nation’s 250th anniversary with tales of ordinary people from Belfast and across Maine who experienced extraordinary events during the Revolution.

They tell of seamen turned privateers with the blessing of the Continental Congress and of Wabanakis who embraced the Patriot cause. They speak of resolute women who defied female standards of decorum in times of trouble. They track the fate of long-suffering families who evacuated Belfast in 1779 after British forces decimated the American fleet sent to destroy the Loyalist stronghold at Castine.

Presenters: Deb Douthart, Barbara Ford-Latty, Rick Gatewood and Spencer Stephens.

We invite you to this FREE and open to the public presentation by the History with Pizzazz Study Group, Tuesday, June 30 at 3:30 PM at the Belfast Free Library. Registration is not required but is greatly appreciated.
